Isle Royale was the 25th national park established in the US.

Key Timeline Details:
Authorized: April 3, 1931
Established: April 1, 1940

While the park was authorized by Congress in 1931, it wasn't officially established until 1940 when the land was fully acquired.

It was further protected from development as a wilderness area in 1976

The Island was declared a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve in 1980.

Isle Royale was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 as the Minong Traditional Cultural Property.

The park covers 894 sq mi (2,320 km2), with 209 sq mi (540 km2) of land and 685 sq mi (1,770 km2) of surrounding waters.
